Roughly 50 vehicles have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they stated in a release.
Law enforcement report they were alerted late on Wednesday, when a individual noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then located multiple other vandalized cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report preliminary tests indicate the liquid was likely human blood.
"There is still no clue as to its origin; officials are not yet cognizant of any injuries in association with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to solve the case" and have appealed to the residents for details.
An important official stated the vandalism left him stunned and needed to be resolved quickly.
"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on online, recalling the death of nine individuals by a shooter focusing on individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
